Kona Raghupathi of YSR Congress Party is the present MLA of the constituency.Bapatla railway station is located on the Howrah-Chennai main line of Indian Railways.The Nizams and Hyder Ali also ruled the city until it came under British rule in 1788.

The settlement might have been near a pond (gunta in Telugu) and hence, gunta uru refers to pond village.
